05 Aug Understanding Video Production
The creative process called the “Video Production Process” is the key to making a great video…! Learn more about it below…!
The production stages required to produce a video may vary a little from video to video. It will depending on the style and content of the video being made and the amount of time, effort and money that is being put into production but… However large or small your video may be… This is the proven production process that successful video producers use…
It works out into three main phases…
The Pre-Production phase…
This 1st step of the video production process is the planning, research, problem-solving and organizational work you do before the shooting starts.
This phase includes…
- The video’s concept
- Script
- Storyboard
- Funding
- Budget
- Insurance
- Personnel
- Talent
- Clearances
- Production
- Facilities, etc. …
All that has to be planned for and brought together to produce the video.
Without a good plan and organization the production of the video can become a grind!
Make sure that you have a very good idea of what it takes as far as structure of the video, time needed for production, equipment and personnel before you start making your video.
Having a good “vision” of what it will take will save you a lot of time, money and aggravation I assure you! And even if it’s a small-time production the kids birthday party for instance…
It’s always a good idea to work it out a little bit ahead of time (even if it’s just in your head) where you want to set up, what kind of shots do you want to take and what do you want to include in the video so that you are sure to capture all the special events of the day that will turn into great memories in the future!
The Production phase…
The actual production of the material needed for the video.
It’s at this stage of the video production process that you are actually producing the…
- Graphics
- Video production camerawork
- Animation
- Music
- Sound
- Lighting effects
- Narration and
- Video footage etc….
Needed for the project.
At this stage you want to produce quality material so that you have plenty to work with when you go into the post production stage.
Be sure to be as expert as possible in your use of your equipment such as; your digital video camera, lighting equipment, sound equipment etc.
Just remember...You can't do a great job in post-production if you don't have great material to work with!
The Post-Production phase…
The 3rd stage of the production process is… The organization and digital video editing of the material into the actual video. Post-production literally brings together all of the different elements created in the production phase. This stage is the process of assembling the media assets you have produced to form the final film or video.
Why is the video production process so important for you to use…?
It is not only for the expert who is producing professional videos! The home video enthusiast shoots a lot of important footage also…!!
A lot of times… like at…
1. Birthdays 2.Anniversaries 3.Weddings
Or other special events you only get one chance to shoot the material or event!! You should always try to control the factors in any video shoot to the point where you are able to shoot the material you want…
In the way you want it to look and sound…
- Bad or no lighting
- Poor camera locations
- Bad camera angles
- Camera shake
- Excessive zooms
- Bad audio
- No b-roll footage shot, etc…
Can make it hard-to-impossible to later edit the material you shot into a meaningful and coherent story. By putting in even a little bit of research, planning and organization before hand using the video production process … You will shoot better more usable material that will allow you to make a much better video.
* And just a tip…There is only so much that you can correct in the editing room if you shoot bad footage..!
Quality material is needed for a great video…!!
Just think how hard it would be to tell those newlyweds that the video you shot of their wedding “didn’t turn out well” and… that you can’t make the video you promised them!! It is important for a videographer to use the video production process… Even if you’re not making a “Hollywood” movie…! Planning, preparation and execution are always needed to insure you shoot the best quality content or material for your video production on the very first try!
That way… you will then have ALL of the material you need to produce a great video!!
